One of the largest banks of the country, United Bank Limited (UBL), has appointed Sima Kamil as chief executive officer (CEO) and president of the bank. The bank has announced on Monday that Sima will be replacing the departing CEO Wajahat Hussain.
Initially, Sima will be working as deputy CEO at UBL and will take over the top position at the bank after 31st May, when Hussain departs from the bank.
As per the official website of UBL, the bank currently controls assets of more than PKR 1 trillion and operates over 1200 branches across Pakistan.
Sima Kamil will be the first woman to head a “major commercial bank” in Pakistan. “She is of course is the first chief of any commercial bank, and it is a huge step forward in the banking and corporate sectors of Pakistan,” Muneer Kamal, the chairman of Pakistan’s Stock Exchange, told AFP.
Sima Kamil has 25 years of experience in banking industry. In 2011, she was appointed as Head of Branch Banking at Habib Bank Limited (HBL), where she oversaw a large expansion of the bank’s branch network. Later, while serving as head of the HBL Asset Management Company Ltd, she was responsible for HBL’s retail, consumer, small and medium enterprises, and rural banking initiatives, as well as the bank’s wealth management division. Moreover, she also led the development of HBL’s Women’s Market Program.
She has a business degree from Kingston University (UK) and an MBA from City University, London. She chairs the Board of Governors of the Karachi Grammar School and is a board member of the Notre Dame Institute of Education.
