It appears that Pakistan Railways (PR) is finally back on track. According to reports, Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique has recently announced that passenger coaches of PR will go through a complete overhaul in the next two years. This decision was taken to make Pakistan Railways profitable again.
The railway minister expressed his satisfaction over the upgradation work being carried out. All trains will be upgraded in accordance with the pre-defined standards. Speaking at a meeting at PR headquarters, Saad Rafique said that workers and employees need to work hard to ensure smooth progress of the organization.
PR has already started upgrading Awami Express, while other passenger trains including Business Express, Karakoram Express, and Karachi Express will get some additional facilities like mobile charging.
Saad Rafique also said that trains like Pakistan Express, Shalimar Express, and Jaffer Express will be drastically changed to bring them at par with rest of the passenger coaches operating in the country.
Saad Rafique was also given briefing about drivers’ training, and the performance of the new American locomotives. The new locomotives were declared an asset by Rafique who said that they should be maintained properly in order to ensure that they keep giving top performance.
Pakistan Railways suffered losses in 2016 and lost PKR 28 billion in one year and PKR 705 billion in 3 years combined. Saad Rafique claimed that condition of PR has improved significantly, as the government is now providing cheaper and safer travelling mode to passengers.
PR has lost its market share to local transporters and domestic airlines due to its poor service. However, with recently introduced improvement measures, PR is trying to reclaim its market share.
