Government of Pakistan is currently investing billions of rupees on infrastructural projects throughout the country. And the major aim of making these huge investments is to bring economic prosperity in the country. Some of the projects that are in the pipeline include Karachi Circular Railways, Lahore Southern Bypass from Motorway to Ferozepur Road, and Faisalabad Solid Waste Management Plant.
While infrastructural development work is going on in quite a few sectors, development of road transportation infrastructure looks to be the main aim of the company. Punjab government, specifically, is leading the race by building new roads and motorways, like the Lahore Sialkot Motorway, across the province in order to make travelling easier for its people.
Pakistan is currently building transportation infrastructure system while developed countries did this in the 19th century and are currently operating subways and metros that billions of people annually. Road infrastructure projects are also increasing under CPEC which include reconstruction of Karakoram Highway, construction of Karachi to Lahore Motorway, and other projects.
Apart from infrastructural development related to roads and transportation, the government needs to shift its focus towards educational and healthcare projects that can improve the overall quality of health, life, and productivity. Pakistan’s literacy rate recently dropped down by 2% to 58%. Moreover, the gap between urban-rural literacy rate also stood at 25% with the urban rate being 74% while rural rate is 49%.
Similarly, health care department has failed to get the attention of the government as it spends a meager 0.9% of GDP on health every year. The World Health Organization has set a benchmark of 6% of GDP expenditure on health care per year for Pakistan, which has not been achieved in the past 10 years. These dismissal numbers are the reason for the unavailability of quality and affordable health care services to the masses.
Can Infrastructure Lead to Economic Development?
The first and foremost thing that the government needs to do is to give more attention towards the health and education sector so that they can contribute to the economic development of the country. The government should start investing on educational and healthcare projects so that the overall conditions of schools, colleges, and hospitals can be improved in the country.
Proper healthcare and educational infrastructure would mean that everyone in the country, whether rich or poor, has access to good quality education and healthcare facilities that currently is missing in the system.
Another thing that the government needs to do is ensure that once any infrastructure project is completed, it is being properly governed. This will help in utilizing the project at its full capacity and we won’t have any projects that are not being properly utilized for the benefit of the general public. Infrastructure and economic development will go hand-in-hand if all the resources and projects are utilized at full capacity.
