Karachi was once said to be the city of lights, with the hustle and bustle of the cosmopolitan continuing till hours after midnight. However, sadly, this is not the case anymore. The financial hub of the country has been constantly ignored by the Sindh government with little or no infrastructure maintenance and development over the span of last few years. Chief Minister Sindh, Murad Ali Shah in his budget speech failed to give any single special project for the development of the city.
The CM even failed to provide an exact figure for the developmental projects of Karachi. The budget documents revealed that the Peoples Party led government has kept only Rs. 12 billion for 14 new and 15 current mega projects in the city under the annual developmental program. Murad Ali Shah did name a few ongoing and future projects that the government will be working on next year worth Rs. 10 billion.
Out of Rs. 10 billion, the government plans to spend Rs. 7.7 billion on new projects while the remaining amount will be spent on the ongoing projects. The new projects include construction of 1,000 mgd pump house at Dhabeji, construction of a bridge on Tipu Sultan Road and Khalid Bin Waleed Road intersection at Shaheed-e-millat road, remodeling of Landhi-Korangi Road, and a 24-feet wide road on both sides of Gujjar Nala.
The ongoing projects on which the government has allocated money include widening of both tracks of Sharah-e-Faisal from Metropole to Star Gate, construction of underpass at Submarine chowrangi, construction of University road from NED to Safoora and reconstruction of road from Madras Chowk to Superhighway.
Apart from this, the government also plans to undergo new mega schemes for next year and also intends to complete the current mega schemes on which it is already working. Some of the new ADP schemes include reconstruction of Tipu Sultan Road from Shahrah-e-Faisal to Karsaz, construction of flyover in Lee market, laying pipeline of 27-inch for better water supply at Baldia town, construction of bridge on Korangi Nullah, construction of road from Tank Chowrangi to Superhighway, and construction of interchange bridge at ICI intersection.
The Sindh CM could not provide a consolidated budget for the six districts of Karachi, but he was able to provide allocations made for
other districts of the province. Huge developmental funds were given out to Hyderabad, Sukhur, Mirupur Khas, and others. Hyderabad will get Rs. 37.13 billion for developmental purpose while Mirpurkhas, Sukhur, and Larkana will receive Rs. 18.72 billion, 14.52 billion, and 18.15 billion.
