Traffic system of Karachi has gone from bad to worse with no proper planning done by the government to build new roads and flyovers as new cars and vehicles continue to hit the road on daily basis. The impact of growing traffic congestion was seen in a study by a German company, kfzteile24, which ranked Karachi as the second worst city to drive in the world.
Out of the total 100 cities that were ranked in the new study, Karachi stood at 99th position, just one point shy of hitting the bottom. The worst city to drive in the world is Kolkata in India. The study took into account several factors like cost of parking, cost of fuel, public transport options, traffic congestion, road quality, accidents, and level of population to determine the driving conditions of the city.
And Karachi has been lagging all these factors, thus there were no surprises that the City of Lights was declared the second worst city in the world to drive in. Karachi is facing severe traffic problems despite several new and old roads being built and renovated, including University Road, Shahra-e-Faisal, and Drig Road Underpass.
Traffic jams in the metropolitan city is a norm during office timings due to thousands of vehicles on the road rushing to go from one part of the city to another. The government has not made any efforts to build new flyovers or increase the size of the roads in order to accommodate the excess load resulting from increased sale of vehicles in the last 2-3 years. According to the data shared by Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association, sales of cars in August 2017 sprung to 18,665 from 15,170 in the same period last year.
Other issues that create traffic issues in Karachi include driving the wrong way, parking on main roads where there is no parking, encroachment of service and main roads, and poor road conditions. The government has not taken any steps to improve the road conditions that are currently in poor shape, specifically in small areas. Bigger roads in the city despite the development work are still not up to the global standard mark and there is a huge need to overhaul the road system of Karachi.
Another problem that the people of Karachi have to witness is the availability of public transportation. For now, only buses are the only mode of public transportation in the country and those buses have completed their life and are in a pathetic state. The public transportation system also needs an overhaul along with the introduction of circular railway that can reduce traffic congestion and dependence on public buses.
