It has been recently reported that Telenor’s Easypaisa has discontinued its flagship Virtual Debit Card service. The service works on the same principle as any normal debit card does. It is important to note that customers can also purchase products online from websites that accept Mastercard.
Subul Naqvi, from Telenor Bank’s Corporate Communications division, has confirmed the news and said that the bank has decided to pull the plug from this service for now. However, she did not provide the reason behind the suspension of this service. She said in a statement that the service will be back soon.
“Easypaisa App users who had generated or were using their Virtual Debit Card were inform that the service would no longer work if they used their card online”, Subul said in a statement.
Moreover, to clear the air about the suspension of virtual debit card, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said that Telenor Bank shut down the service because microfinance banks are not allowed to offer online payment, particularly virtual debit card services. Also, the central bank believes that such services could easily be abused by the consumers.
Easypaisa allowed its customers to obtain multiples cards with only one condition that two of all the cards should be active at any given time. In simple words, customers could create multiple cards and after use can easily deactivate them.
