Cement industry in Pakistan is making huge strides as it was reported that cement dispatches surged 10.63% year-on-year to 3.964 million tons in March as the factories utilized their full production capacity to cater to the demand in the local market, industry data showed on Thursday.
Figures released by All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) indicate that the cement industry dispatched 3.583 million tons of cement in March 2016. The figures indicate that cement sales soared up to 23% in March compared to the figures of the corresponding month a year ago. Nevertheless, the exports of cement decreased significantly by 60.39%.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the cement industry is playing its due role to keep up the momentum. In addition, the figures revealed by APCMA indicates that cement dispatches during the first nine months of the current fiscal year stood at 30.304 million tons that is the highest ever dispatches recorded in the first nine months of any fiscal year. Also, analysts believe that dispatch figure could be even higher if the smuggling and under invoicing of the cement is curbed.
An association spokesman said that development under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects has started to bear fruits. “The ever-increasing domestic market has vindicated the manufacturers’ thrust on adding new capacities,” he said. “Pakistan needs sustained infrastructure activities for at least a decade to close the infrastructure gap with the competing economies.”
Mills based in Northern parts of the country dispatched 3.058 million tons cement in March 2017 for domestic consumption, while those located in the South dispatched 0.695 million tons of cement during the same period. However, during the same months last year the exports from North were only 0.141 million tons and from South 0.071 million tons.
